Holstein UK news release 04/04/2012

With the top six Holsteins, and 14 of the top 20, Braedale Goldwyn sons maintain their dominance at the head of the international daughter proven sire lists for type published by Holstein UK today (April 3rd) following the April proofs.

Continuing to lead the way is Toc-Farm Goldsun, who celebrates twelve months at the top of the list. With a Type Merit of 4.55, he has a considerable advantage over the newcomer Mr Atlees Altaamazing (Goldwyn x Durham) in second place with a Type Merit of 4. Altaamazing’s proof shows his daughters are tall and wide with excellent mammary systems, including 4.28 for Rear Udder Height.

Improving his Type Merit marginally to 3.77 is Zelgadis in third place, although he loses one place from December. Following closely behind with a TM of 3.74 comes Toc-Farm Goldfish, the full brother to long-time leader Goldsun (Goldwyn x Allen) who moves into the top 10 this time. Completing the top 5 is Lirr Drew Dempsey (Goldwyn x Derry) who moves back up the rankings with a TM of 3.57.

Highest PLI

The highest Profitable Lifetime Index (PLI) sire in the top 10 is Sabbiona Goldfarm, who boasts a TM of 3.43. This Goldwyn x Storm newcomer combines high fat and protein deviations with a balanced linear profile in his PLI of £176. Returning to the top 10 from just outside is Henkeseen Emphasis with a TM of 3.38. A Titanic x Durham cross, he is the highest ranked bull not sired by Goldwyn and he is followed by two more in Zandenburg Yoko Sam Yury (Mr Sam x Stormatic) and the UK-bred Curtismill Mr Sam (Mr Sam x Mtoto) with Type Merits of 3.36 and 3.34 respectively. Both show an improvement in TM from December; Yury moves up from sixteenth while Sam eases from sixth.

Completing the top 10 is Van Gogh (Goldwyn x Rudolph), who despite improving his Type Merit to 3.29 loses five places in the rankings.

Newcomers

Outside the top 10, there are newcomers in All.Margherita Coitus (Shottle x Campogallo PG Tresor) with a TM of 3.29 in eleventh and Bomaz Shtl Kolton 629 (Shottle x Durham) in fourteenth equal with a TM of 3.21 alongside an exciting outcross sire for many in Kings-Ransom P Richman (Keystone Potter x Muranda Mandel Moe).

Also of interest with a Type Merit of 3.13 is Danillo (Goldwyn x Oman), who rates as the highest PLI sire in the top 20 type ranking with £219. With a Type Merit of 3.11, the final spots in the top 20 rest with Maryclerc Symphony (Goldwyn x Champion) and Regel Elegant Beagle, the December entry who debuted in fourth place.

UK-proven sires

In addition to Curtismill Mr Sam, UK-proven sires continue to show up well in the international rankings. With 23 daughters classified in the UK, Jenny-Lou Shottle Trump comes up with a TM of 2.97. UK-bred Bassingthorpe Bossman eases marginally to a Type Merit of 2.87, while Cogent Loader confirms his potential with a solid TM of 2.79. Acecroft Goldwyn Zulu (Goldwyn x Durham) maintains his December promise with a TM of 2.74 while newcomer Ballycairn Jose Verve boasts a Type Merit of 2.6 and a PLI of £166, making this Jose x Urnieta Zelati II outcross a very interesting prospect.

Genomic data

“Whilst all the sires on these lists are proven on the basis of milking daughters, the addition of genomic data for the first time has resulted in alterations to some of the proofs,” says Holstein UK’s Lucy Andrews.

“This extra information is a welcome addition to the evaluations, but it is important that farmers continue to take account of the reliability of a sire’s proof before they consider using him on their herd.”
