Holstein UK news release 04/04/2012
The first genomic evaluation ranking list for type has been published this week (3 April) by Holstein UK and it offers dairy farmers a potentially valuable new source of information.
Sires owned by North American AI studs dominate the top of the rankings as UK breeders are unable to genomically test males, unless through a UK stud, until 2013. However, the UK-bred and proven Picston Shottle has a considerable influence and is present in the pedigree of many of the highest young sires.
There are 32 young sires with a Type Merit (TM) of 3 or higher and leading the way with a TM of 4.21 is Regancrest-GV S Bradnick, a Sanchez x Shottle cross from the Barbie family. Both his dam, Regancrest Breya, and grand dam, Regancrest-PR Barbie, are former leaders of the type list in the USA. Both Bradnick’s Mammary and Legs & Feet composites are over 3.
The only other sire to rate over 4 for TM is Gibbs-I Claynook Dude at 4.04. By the Goldwyn son Atwood and out of a Bolton daughter, Dude also has ratings of over 3 for Mammary and Legs & Feet. Topping the rankings for Legs & Feet at 4.17 is Regan-ALH Shottle Bohdan, a Shottle x Toystory cross with a TM of 3.85, ranking him third overall.
In fourth place with a TM of 3.76 sits Sully Hart Meridian, sired by Ronelee Toystory Domain out of a Planet dam. Meridian has a Mammary score of 3.79, ranking him top for this essential index. He is followed by Mountfield SSI DCY Mogul with 3.64 TM. The highest PLI sire in the top 20 at £192, Mogul is by the Bolton son Coyne-Farms Dorcy out of a Pasen Marsh dam.
There’s another scion of the Barbie family is equal sixth place: Winterlance Spear. A Spearmint x Goldwyn cross, Spear shares his TM of 3.59 with Mr Atwood Brokaw, an Atwood x Mac cross. Both young sires also share a Mammary score of 3.23 while Brokaw boasts the higher Legs & Feet rating of 2.85.
In eighth place with a TM of 3.58 is Navs Shari Marico, sired by the Marshall son Mac and out of a Shottle dam. With a Mammary score of 3.3, he is closely followed by Minnigan-Hills Day at 3.55 TM. This Superstition x Bolton cross also rates over 3 for Mammary and has a PLI of £179.
Completing the top 10 is Go-Farm Royal Eudon with a TM of 3.46. By Million and out of the Shottle daughter Wabash-Way Emilyann, Eudon is a maternal half brother to Willsbro Emilyann that sold to Spain for a record 90,000gns in 2010.
Highest ranked of the UK-bred young sires for type is the Lancashire-bred Heavenly Golden Dreams with a TM of 3.15. A Goldwyn x Durham cross, Golden Dreams has a Legs & Feet composite of 3.22. Next in line is Willsbro Ash with a TM of 2.98. A result of the productive Shottle x Goldwyn cross, Ash hails from the Ashlyn family and has Mammary and Legs & Feet scores over 2.5. At 2.78 TM, Majestic Leon is a Million son out of a Shottle from the Licorice family while his Gerard half brother, Majestic Lionel, has a TM of 2.64.
“This is the first time we have been able to produce an official ranking list of young sires with a genomic evaluation,” explained Lucy Andrews of Holstein UK.
“They offer UK dairy farmers an exciting new generation of Holstein breeding, but it’s vital that everyone is aware that these are young sires with no daughters in milk yet. Genomic bulls have higher reliability than young sires evaluated on parent average only; around 65% as opposed to 35% reliability,” Lucy continued.
“Nowadays, every young sire available from the main UK studs will have been pre-selected using genomics and few studs worldwide will be offering young, unproven Holstein sires without a genomic value.”
